The College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce the 2024-2025 CAS Champions.
CAS Champions are student ambassadors who serve as leaders within the College. These ambassadors are selected to represent the various disciplines within CAS and support the College’s initiatives in connecting students to the university and to the community. Champions also participate in the College's recruitment efforts and messaging, including answering questions from prospective students and creating content for the College’s Instagram.
Meet the 2024-2025 CAS Champions team:
Hunter Hutcherson
Senior
Political Science and Communication Studies
“Hello, everyone! My name is Hunter Hutcherson, and I am from Oneonta, AL. I am a senior majoring in both political science and communication studies.
Here at UAB, I am the president of the Undergraduate Communication Association. I am also conducting research within the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, focusing on urban affairs in relation to street art in the city of Birmingham. After graduation, I will participate in an internship in Washington, D.C. and hope to return and earn an MPA here at UAB and one day work in urban affairs.
I am so excited to be working as a CAS champion this year. Go Blazers!”
Ava Benson
Junior
Immunology
“My name is Ava Benson, and I’m a junior majoring in immunology with minors in chemistry, biology, and spanish! I made UAB my home in 2023 as I fell in love with the Joint Health Program and the close-knit community of the Undergraduate Immunology Program.
I'm currently the vice president of the Undergraduate Immunology Society as well (shameless plug), and I love doing outreach work with kids at the McWane Science Center. I love traveling, and my favorite trip I’ve ever been on was to Ireland. I keep myself busy, but I still make some time to watch Love Island and other bad reality TV shows. I’m also extremely extroverted, so don’t be afraid to come up and talk if you see me on campus!”
Soundharya Ramanathan
Senior
English and Psychology
“Hi everyone! My name is Soundharya, and I’m a current senior majoring in English linguistics and psychology, with minors in chemistry and communication management. When I first arrived on campus, I had a hard time figuring out what I wanted to study (fun fact, I changed my major three times!). However, I knew I wanted to make my education as interdisciplinary as possible. I wanted to personalize my classes, acquire adaptable skillsets, and approach real-world concepts from a broader perspective.
Three years later, I consider myself incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to take classes in various fields — ranging from political science, to literature, and to computer science. I’ve especially enjoyed seeing how the concepts I learn in one class translate into those of another. Even more, I’m grateful to have had the guidance and mentorship from my professors, some of whom I’ve gotten to work with on independent projects. As a Champion, I look forward to spotlighting my integrative experiences within CAS to UAB students and the UAB community!”
Laura Pigott
Senior
BFA in Art Studio
“Hi, I’m Laura Pigott and I am excited to be a CAS Champion! I grew up here in the Birmingham area and always loved UAB’s campus. I also grew up loving and appreciating all different kinds of art, so going to UAB to pursue my Bachelor of Fine Arts was a no-brainer!
My main medium is oil painting, specifically portraits. I love capturing someone’s face or expression in my art. Aside from school, I also enjoy playing video games and reading. My real passion is animals, and I foster cats and kittens through the local humane society.”
