Once again, College of Arts & Sciences’ students show not only their impressive academic standing, but also innovative thinking and the desire to create change. Seventeen UAB students, ten of whom hail from the College, were chosen to visit the University of Miami from March 6-8 for the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGIU).

This program, created by President Bill Clinton in 2007, aims to create a community of young leaders that take action in order to solve global issues. CGIU encourages students to recognize the power they have in making a difference in the world, particularly as it relates to the initiative’s five core areas of education, environment, human rights, poverty alleviation, and public health.

According to the CGIU website, the program has led to more than 4,800 Commitments to Action and almost $2 million in funding for those attempting to make the world a better place.

The UAB participants come from four different schools and nine fields of study, with fourteen undergraduate students and three graduate students. The College of Arts and Sciences representatives are Jessica Deitzer, Julien Grayer, Megan Webb, Rebecca Massey, Ali Massoud, Nicole Ogle, Shejuti Paul, Joseph Richardson, Abdullah Tarawneh, and Richard Trieu.
