Fifteen undergraduates from universities across the country will be on campus as part of the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Summer Program from May 19-July 25.
The REU program provides a 10-week, hands-on research experience for undergraduate students run by the Center for Nanoscale Materials and Biointegration (CNMB). Participants will work in the labs of UAB's renowned scientists. Students will work on projects that will contribute, in some way, to the work already being conducted in the labs.
The participating students, 10 of whom are Physics majors, hail from a variety of prestigious institutions, including Georgia Tech, Carnegie Mellon, Sewanee, Brigham Young, University of California-Berkeley, Brown, Mississippi State, the University of North Alabama, and more. Lamario Williams, a double major in Biomedical Sciences and Biophysics, will represent UAB.
In addition, two high school teachers, Matthew McCollum from Homewood High School and Keisha Williams from Robert E. Lee High School (Montgomery) will also participate in the Research Experience for Teachers (RET) component of the program. The goal of the RET program is to encourage gains in intellectual professional growth, not merely technical training. These teachers will simultaneously support of the development of the students taking part in the REU program.
The REU and RET Summer Programs are supported by the National Science Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. We welcome these accomplished students and instructors to campus.
