The University of Alabama at Birmingham continues to host its long-running National Science Foundation—Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. The program, which is facilitated by the Department of Physics and the Center for Nanoscale Materials and Biointegration, is titled “Regional Initiative to Promote Undergraduate Participation in Experimental and Computational Materials Research.”
This year’s REU program will run from May 19 – July 26, and each student will participate in 400 hours of research with a UAB faculty mentor. Over 170 students from across the country applied for the program, and, in total, 15 were selected to participate. They include:
- Hannah Burch, University of North Georgia
- Amaya Caudel, Austin Peay State University
- Kierra Dalrymple, Spelman College
- Cheick Dore, University of the District of Columbia
- Thomas Freeman, Middle Tennessee State University
- Joshua Gates, Savannah State University
- Cassidy Granger, Spring Hill College
- Reyna Hobson, Florida A&M University
- Mitchel Huott, The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina
- Maren Kagin, Coe College
- Lydia Kennemer, Alabama A&M University
- Jackson Marlett, Missouri University of Science and Technology
- Erik Stewart, Sewanee: The University of the South
- India White, Mississippi State University
- Yahia Gadalla, University of Alabama at Huntsville
The group participated in a kick-off event on May 20 in the Science and Engineering Complex. The event featured introductions, information about the program, and remarks from College of Arts and Sciences Dean Kecia M. Thomas and Associate Dean for Research and Innovation Yogesh K. Vohra.
