Dr. Thomas McCauley (UAB Physics PhD - Class of 1996) has assumed a Vice President position at Shire Pharmaceuticals. Dr. McCauley joined Shire in 2010 and heads its global nonclinical development.
In addition to his current focus on research and development of novel therapeutics for the Rare Disease, Neuroscience, Gastrointestinal, Internal Medicine and Regenerative Medicine business units, Tom has over thirteen years of experience in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries in preclinical and clinical discovery and development of biologic and small molecule drugs for indications in cardiovascular disease, hematology, oncology, inflammation and ophthalmology.
He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Cornell University, and received his PhD from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. McCauley's thesis work was in chemical vapor deposited diamond research. Previously Dr. McCauley worked at Brandies University and Argonne National Laboratory.
