I received my B.S. from Birmingham-Southern College and M.S. from the University of Alabama in my home state before moving to Georgia to complete my doctoral work examining effects of nutrient enrichment on carbon resources and associated microbial and animal consumers at the University of Georgia. Prior to starting my Ph.D., I taught a variety of organismal and ecology labs here in the Department of Biology at UAB as a Lab Coordinator and then taught introductory biology and water and wastewater treatment processes at Gadsden State Community College.

My research has been focused on human impacts on structure and function of aquatic ecosystems in the southeastern US, including the Cahaba River. I was also fortunate to have two short-term teaching positions in the state of New York, where I experienced salmon migration and many frozen lakes. My teaching interests and experience range from general biology and environmental science to ecology and zoology. As someone who was a first-generation college student, one of my goals as an instructor is to help remove learning barriers for all students.
