Mr. Darrin Abbott enlisted in the Army in May, 1984, in Longwood, Florida. He attended One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort McClellan, Alabama, and served in the Military District of Washington MP Company from September, 1984, until he left the Army in May, 1986. In July, 1987, he enlisted again and attended OSUT at the U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and remained on Active Duty until July 31, 2009, when he retired with 24 years of service.

His duty assignments include the Military District of Washington at Fort Myer, Virginia; 2^nd Battalion, 5^th Cavalry Regiment, 1^st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas; 2^nd Battalion 30^th Infantry Regiment, 5^th Battalion 15^th Infantry Regiment, and 1^st Battalion 15^th Infantry Regiment, 3^rd Infantry Division, in Schweinfurt, Germany; 2nd Battalion 7^th Infantry Regiment, 24^th Infantry Division, at Fort Stewart, Georgia; 1st Battalion 18^th Infantry Regiment, 1^st Infantry Division, in Schweinfurt, Germany; 3^rd Battalion 7^th Infantry Regiment, 3^rd Infantry Division, at Fort Stewart, Georgia; and three years as a Military Science Instructor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Army ROTC program.

Mr. Abbott’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2), Army Commendation Medal (3 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (5 OLC), Army Presidential Unit Citation Award, Army Superior Unit Award (2), Army Good Conduct Medal (6), National Defense Service Ribbon (2), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with campaign star, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (3), Overseas Service Ribbon (3), NATO Medal (2), the United Nations Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

After retiring in 2009, Mr. Abbott continued his civilian education and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Mr. Abbott returned to the UAB Army ROTC program as the Logistics Technician in April, 2112, and has served in that position since then.

Mr. Abbott is married to the former Kimberly Rafferty and lives in Pell City, Alabama.
