Mr. Darrin Abbott enlisted in the Army in May, 1984, in Longwood, Florida. He attended One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort McClellan, Alabama, and served in the Military District of Washington MP Company from September, 1984, until he left the Army in May, 1986. In July, 1987, he enlisted again and attended OSUT at the U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and remained on Active Duty until July 31, 2009, when he retired with 24 years of service.
His duty assignments include the Military District of Washington at Fort Myer, Virginia; 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas; 2nd Battalion 30th Infantry Regiment, 5th Battalion 15th Infantry Regiment, and 1st Battalion 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, in Schweinfurt, Germany; 2nd Battalion 7th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, at Fort Stewart, Georgia; 1st Battalion 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in Schweinfurt, Germany; 3rd Battalion 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, at Fort Stewart, Georgia; and three years as a Military Science Instructor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Army ROTC program.
Mr. Abbott’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2), Army Commendation Medal (3 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (5 OLC), Army Presidential Unit Citation Award, Army Superior Unit Award (2), Army Good Conduct Medal (6), National Defense Service Ribbon (2), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with campaign star, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (3), Overseas Service Ribbon (3), NATO Medal (2), the United Nations Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
After retiring in 2009, Mr. Abbott continued his civilian education and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Mr. Abbott returned to the UAB Army ROTC program as the Logistics Technician in April, 2112, and has served in that position since then.
Mr. Abbott is married to the former Kimberly Rafferty and lives in Pell City, Alabama.
